Understanding the basics of search engine optimisation is an essential skill for any person doing business on the internet. With this important skill, you will ensure that your site ranks high in search engines. A high ranking will drive a lot of traffic to your site. This will eventually transformed to increase revenue for your site. If you are just starting out and you are unsure of what to do to start making money online, then you should learn more about search engine optimisation.

The first thing you need to know is how keywords are used to rank pages and sites in search engines. Keywords are simply words people type in on the search bar of different search engines to search for things on the internet. For example, it a person is looking for more information on caring for a baby, some terms or keywords which may be used to search for related content may include "care tips for infants," "infant sleep," "information about taking care of babies," "infant feeding" and "baby care" just to mention a few.

The search engine will then generate results of sites which have information on the topic. If you are selling things online, you will have to include specific keywords related to the products throughout your ad campaigns, website content and in articles you write and use to create link backs to your website. The most ideal keyword density for site content should be 2 to 3 percent. This basically means that if you are writing a 300 word article for your site, the chosen keyword should appear six to nine times in the entire article. The keywords should also be strategically placed in the title, in the first line of the first paragraph, the first line of the last paragraph and several times in the body of the article.

Keywords are categorized into three groups. Highly competitive keywords are made up of one or two words and are normally very broad in nature, such as "diapers," "baby," or "Native Americans." While this group of keywords experience high traffic, the conversion rates are usually very low. The second group consists of keywords which have more than two words. They are more specific compared to the first group and their conversion rate is very high because they are less competitive. The last group of keywords is composed of long sentences which are specific to a particular topic. They have the highest conversion rate but they experience the lowest traffic. Mixing all the three types of keywords in your site content will increase the amount of traffic directed towards your site.

When optimizing your site for a particular keyword, you must first identify the words people use to search for content. There are some tools to help you identify such terms. They include Word Tracker, Google Trends and Google Insights.

With these simple tips, making money online will be an easy task for you. You can now launch your search engine optimisation campaign that will see your business succeed.
