Surf Through the Mess
These days, if you're not online, then you're not connected to the rest of the world. One way to stake your presence on the internet is to make your own free website. The beauty of personal websites is that the World, or the World Wide Web, is your oyster. There is almost no limit to what you can create, what hobbies, idols or plans you can dedicate the site towards. This can almost be called the easy part! The hard part comes in simply choosing what company to use to host a site. An array of different companies offers a wide range of choices, which allow you to make a website. So what are some of the main points you should look out for? Reviews - you should search online for reviews of companies that help you to create a free website. This will let you see what others have found in their searches, and can save you time. It is also important to look at examples of what the company offers and what you are getting. For example you may be given a control panel to help organise your site. Is this easy to use? Do you instantly understand it? Or is it over-complicated and confusing? How many emails addresses you do get? What size of server will it be? This is important because it may also define how many pages you are allowed to use. A great-looking site may be completely pointless if there are only a handful of pages allowed. Many companies out there also offer technical support - so it's worth speaking to the technical support in advance, to ask them the key questions on your mind, and then check the responsiveness and helpfulness of their replies to you. Disk space is also important. For the same reason as bandwidth, watch out for this. Most sites need less than 10 MB of web space, so even if you are provided with a host that tempts you with 200 MB or 500 MB (or "unlimited space"), be aware that you are unlikely to use that space, so don't let the 500 MB space be too big a factor in your consideration when comparing with other web hosts. The hosting company is also aware of that, which is why they feel free to offer you that as a means of enticing you to host there. Lastly, each site may offer advertising space on your site. So have a look at each site and see what it will really give you. Happy hosting!
