How Social is Networking?
Social networking is alive and well, but is it just a fad that will burn out? Social Networking has become very popular during the past few years, but it can still be very difficult to understand for someone new to social networking. The open-ended nature of social networks adds to this. Once signed onto a social network, having answered a few basic profile questions, it is easy to sit back and wonder what you are supposed to do next. The easiest way to understand social networking is to think of it like high school. You had friends in school, and you knew quite a few people even if you weren't friends with all of them, but it's likely that you didn't know everyone. If you ever moved to a new school -- or if you can imagine moving to a new school -- you start out with no friends. After attending classes, you start meeting people, and as you meet them, you begin associating with those that have similar interests. Getting started with social networking is much the same as starting at a new school. At first, you don't have any friends. But as you join groups, you begin to meet people, and you build a friends list of those with similar interests. Much like going to a party or joining a book club, social networking can be a lot of fun. And, like getting involved in a writer's group or going to a business conference, it can also be very productive for your career. Social Networking can be many things to many people, but you won't ever know what it could mean to you until you try it out for yourself. Social book marking refers to the practice of saving and categorizing a particular site and sharing it with others via social book marking communities. Users can share their own personal Web bookmarks, but they also have the quite wonderful option of discovering other people's bookmarks and adding them to their own collection. More sites can be discovered, more treasures unearthed, if you work together as a whole instead of by yourself; it's truly amazing what people are able to turn up together on the Web. But can this just be too faddish? Maybe it would be better to make your own website. That way, you will really stand out from the crowd - and finding a free website builder will mean that you can personalise everything, rather than use the same format. With your own free website, you will be the one in control.
