Here's a short pop quiz: What's the number one greeting card holiday of the year? If you said, Pan American Aviation Day, no prize for you. But you probably said Christmas, or, "The Holidays". Bingo! Not a big surprise (especially if you're a mail carrier) that more cards are sent for the December greeting card holiday than any other occasion.

But what may surprise you is that the merriest season of all sees about 1.5 billion cards sent through the mail in the US alone. It seems Americans are still greeting holiday cards with a hearty, ho ho ho.

Maybe you're old school sentimental. Or you spent big bucks on calligraphy lessons. Whatever motivates you, you're ready to contribute to the greeting card holiday volume. Great! There are so many ways to say just the right thing to all the right people. Do you go for funny, sentimental, obnoxious? There's a holiday card in almost every flavor. For example the website www.seltzergoods.com has dozens of styles to choose from. All printed wonderfully on thick, luxurious recycled paper.

And don't worry, you won't seem like a techno-dummy for putting conventional pen to traditional paper. It's still “cool”. (If you want to keep score, e-cards barely scratch the surface at about 300 million sent annually.)

A nice hand-signed card can make someone's year. Who doesn't love tearing into that envelope and seeing someone's actual handwriting? There's no better way to say…whatever it is you want to say.

As the world moves faster and faster, and our sentences get shorter and shorter, maybe there will be some sort of inverse lovefest for the real, honest-to-goodness greeting card holiday. (Shall we try to hit 2 billion this year!?)

There's no doubt, the e-card thing will continue to gain momentum, but will it replace the physical greeting holiday cards? Probably not until they find a way to prop an email on the fireplace mantle. Seems like Americans will be greeting holiday cards with enthusiasm for a while yet.
