Saving Gas with an AEM Air Intake System
The process of combustion requires three key elements: fuel, heat and air. For car engines, combustion happens when gas and air mix inside the chamber combined with pressure from the piston and a spark from a spark plug. The products of the combustion process are carbon dioxide and energy. This energy is what powers the car and its system.
It is not enough that you only need fuel for your car to take you places; you also need air. Engine parts include an air intake system which feeds air into the chamber to contribute in the production of energy. Air is important since it is one of the ingredients for starting a fire. Without any form of oxidation, the gas inside will fail to ignite—no combustion, no power.
Modern air intake systems are known to be fuel efficient in terms of their design. They save fuel by allowing more air for combustion to burn inside the chamber. This basically means that the car is making the most out of the gas that flows inside the piston. The more air combustion burns, the more energy it produces; giving the car more mileage out of less gas.
There are two air intake systems that are popular for their fuel efficiency. The first one feeds cool air in the combustion chamber by way of an Air Lift compressor. There is more oxygen for the engine to burn with cool air because of its density compared to warm air. The extra amount of air helps the combustion process yield more energy.
The second air intake system is the opposite of the first one: using warm air as the oxidant. A common misconception is that this system is not fuel efficient because there is less air to burn with a less dense air. However, the parts for this system are designed to allow more air into the engine, giving the engine more air to burn. Air Lift bags adjust the level of pressure by which the air is fed into the engine.
No matter which AEM air intake system cars use; both systems are effective gas savers. The amount of air being used in the combustion process determines how much motorists are getting out of their full tank. It comes to no surprise that having a reliable air intake system will save you dollars on gassing up.
