Most of us have been fascinated by those flying saucer-type contraptions that people use to look for important metal or coins and we have been seeing them for centuries on the television or in the movies. These devices are real and they detect metals and are called metal detectors. To put it simply, a metal detector is an instrument which reacts when there is metal in its surrounding vicinity, apparent or not.

The very first metal detectors were used in the 1960s and were used for mining and other industrial purposes. Modern usage of metal detectors include de-mining or to spot land mines that were left by enemy forces in time of war, the detection of illegal weapons such as metal knives and guns in public areas like malls, restaurants, airports, and other similar public facilities, geophysical prospecting or land surveying, archeology or the Indiana Jones type of adventure which also leads to treasure hunting. Other applications of metal detectors are as follows: detection of steel reinforcements within concrete structures and the discovery of foreign items in food.

Now if I have motivated your interest in metal detection and/or treasure hunting and you want to have your own metal detector, you can search online and check on the many models and styles of metal detectors that are sold in the market. If you don't want to spend more on your first metal detector since you are still starting out, a novice metal detector is just as good as all the other metal detectors out in the market. It's not like rocket science to learn how they work and when you are just starting out and have just got your feet wet, you may want to learn the basics first in metal detection before you proceed to the more sophisticated and high-end metal detectors out there in the market.

Research thoroughly about the area and you will be able to figure out where you can detect pieces of metals and coins--these are tiny tips you must follow when you are about to set out on your first metal hunt. The shallow portion of the beach is a good place to start because this is where people play their games and they become unmindful of their valuables such as the jewelries that they wear.
