If you've recently bought a new plasma or LCD TV and want to make sure you're getting the best possible performance out of it then there are a couple of steps you can take to ensure you have the perfect set-up.

The most important thing to realise is that your television needs a high definition source before it can display a high definition picture; if all you're watching are the standard definition TV channels you watched using your previous TV then you aren't going to see a marked improvement. To make the most out of your new TV you'll want to connect an appliance capable of providing an HD picture - and luckily enough there are plenty of inexpensive options for you to choose from.

So what high definition options do you have? Well, the one that will transform your everyday viewing is an HD set top box. These boxes provide a whole host of high definition channels, including HD versions of some of the standard definition channels you know and love. The difference between HD and standard definition channels is like night and day, so be prepared for a huge improvement to your viewing experience.

If you're a movie lover then you'll also want to pick up a Blu-ray player; while DVDs look great on an HD television, they aren't a high definition source. For that you'll want to be able to play Blu-rays, which offer a stunning HD picture capable of showing off your new TV to its maximum potential.

Another great piece of kit perfect for making the most of your HDTV is a high definition games console such as an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. With hundreds of incredible looking games available for each console, this is a perfect way for families to enjoy the new television together.

Whichever of these options you go for, you'll also need an HDMI cable in order to connect it to your TV. Some of the pieces of kit mentioned above will include an HDMI cable in the package but it's always worth checking just in case. Thankfully, the cables are inexpensive, so you won't be too badly out of pocket if you need to buy one separately.

In addition, if you have a digital camera or video camera capable of taking high quality shots and video then your TV is the perfect way to watch them back, while using your TV as a monitor by connecting up your laptop or desktop PC will mean you can also watch any high definition content you may be storing on your computer. Again, you'll need an HDMI cable to connect your laptop, assuming it has an HDMI port. If not, a DVI cable can also transmit high definition content to your television.

Once you have connected up your high definition source(s) then it's also worth tweaking your television's settings to achieve the best possible picture for your needs. If delving into your TV's menus and tampering with the calibration settings is a daunting prospect, search for your TV's model number online; there are a host of forums out there dedicated to calibrating televisions for the best performance which will guide you through step-by-step.
