Five things to consider when buying a new bed
A new bed is a major purchase, so it's important that you end up buying something that you're going to be happy with for years to come. As with most major pieces of furniture, it pays to be prepared and do some research before you race into a decision. Here are five factors to consider before you sign on the dotted line:
Which style?
As you'll soon discover, beds are available in hundreds of different shapes and styles, so try to narrow down your shortlist early on. Do the storage options offered by a divan set suit your needs best? Or are you more interested in a traditional bedframe? If it's the latter, which material would you like the frame to be constructed from? The choice is huge, with wooden, metal, leather and upholstered fabric frames all proving popular.
Which mattress?
When it comes to mattresses, the choice can be mind-boggling at first glance so your first action should be to decide on which general type you would prefer. Will you go for a traditional sprung mattress, or would you prefer the comfort offered by a memory foam mattress? If you're affected by allergies or asthma, a hypoallergenic latex mattress may be the way to go. If you've no idea which would suit you best, head down to your local bed store and test out all of your options. Remember, you're not obliged to buy from there just because you've sampled the mattresses - always check online before committing to a purchase to see if you can get a better deal elsewhere.
How big?
Be sure to measure your bedroom carefully before choosing the size of bed and mattress you want to go for - and remember that just because the room will physically take a particular size of bed, that doesn't mean that the bed in question will look right once it's in the room. Try and think about scale; draw yourself a diagram if it helps. You'll want to ensure that there's plenty of clearance around the sides of the bed once it's in place to allow access.
How much?
Decide on a price range and stick to it - there are plenty of quality beds out there to suit all budgets, so don't feel pressured into spending beyond your means. Yes, it's important to buy a bed that's going to stand you in good stead for a number of years, but with the quality of beds available for reasonable prices nowadays there's no need to break the bank.
What does that mean?
Don't get confused by the jargon associated with bed buying, especially when it comes to mattresses. Head online and do some research so you know exactly what you're getting into before you buy - after all, would you know the difference between a continuous spring mattress and a pocket sprung mattress? Or which you would prefer between a micro- or deep-quilted mattress? Read up in advance so that you know exactly what you're looking for.
