Five great fancy dress ideas for Halloween
When it comes to getting all dressed up for Halloween, you've got two choices. You can either buy one of the many excellent pre-made fancy dress outfits available online and in relevant stores, or come up with your own costume from bits and pieces that are easily obtainable - or that you may even already have lying around the house. If you decide to go down the latter route, then here are a few ideas to get you going:
Ghost
If you don't feel like spending a long time creating your costume then covering yourself in a white bedsheet and cutting some eyeholes is always an easy option. If you're up for putting a little more effort in, though, try and emulate a famous ghost. Jacob Marley from ‘A Christmas Carol' is a good one - apply white face paint with darker patches around the eyes for that gaunt look, wear a white robe wrapped in chains and tie your jaw closed with a bandage. Easy!
Vampire
This is another one that you can pull off with relative ease. You'll need to buy or make a black cape, along with some false teeth with fangs to give your vampire some bite. Couple your cape with suitably dark clothing and finish the look with white face paint and slicked back hair. You could even apply some fake blood around your mouth to make it look like you're fresh from a feed.
Witch
Every witch needs their trusty broom so you'll need to do a bit of prop hunting to compliment the rest of your costume. As for what to wear, the classic witch's hat is a must, so look at either picking one up from a store that stocks fancy dress items or making your own - if you're not too handy with a sewing machine, you could always fashion one from black card. You'll also want a black cape and a wig might also be in order depending on how flexible your hairstyle is. Apply green face paint and maybe even a fake wart on your nose and you're good to go.
Devil
Red is the order of the day! You'll want a red cape over red clothes as well as red face paint to create that devilish look. Other accessories that will add to your costume include a forked tail, red devil horns for your head - and, of course, a trident. Hunt around and see what you can find; if you have no luck then the tail and horns are easy enough to fashion yourself with the right materials and a little effort.
Zombie
This can be a tricky one to pull off but if you get it right you'll have one of the best costumes of the evening. Find some clothes that you don't mind ruining and set about ripping them to create some suitably spooky rags. The real key with a convincing zombie, though, is the make-up. Remember that you're supposed to have risen from the dead, so you want to look like you originally met with a ghastly demise - use white face paint to achieve that ‘death warmed up' look and get someone to help you paint on a convincing head wound to really complete the look.
