Search Agencies - the SEO guarantee debate
Once upon a time, not that many years ago, all the most reputable SEO companies used to vie for new business and offer a dream of guarantees to secure that new business deal. The more aggressive the SEO market became, the more outlandish the guarantees until it came full circle with the top guns of the SEO world refusing to provide any guarantees.
Those companies who still offered them were frowned upon and prevented from joining certain forums of promotional sites as they were viewed as charlatans or were dealing in dubious practices, miss-leading their clients with hazy marketing language. Like the old sale oil salesman, an SEO agency offering a guarantee was out to hoodwink their clients and con them out of their hard earned cash!
True?? I don't tend to agree as there are two sides to every story and the customers using the SEO agencies appear to be getting the rough deal.
Yes (God knows I have heard it enough), SEO firms don’t own search engines or search engine algorithms and don’t have control over how the results are displayed and how long the rankings would last for any site. Yes does this absolve an SEO company of any responsibility in the delivery of their service? Is this not a very convenient way of sitting on a fence and blaming the things you seek to control because you have no control....is that in fact then not a service but maybe luck, chance or risk you are selling instead?
SEO when you take it right down to basics is marketing, and if you know what you are doing then surely you can offer some insight into what the customer can expect for the service that they are paying? Guaranteeing is something that happens across not only the search market but pretty much anywhere, with regard to any service. So many people just say, "No, you cannot guarantee something you do not control". Last time I looked, business was about the definition of a guarantee. I would not buy a product or service without a standard guarantee, so why does SEO expect me to do it? I feel that that is a breach of my rights and I personally won’t be spending money with anyone who cannot offer me some sort of security.
I know that there are a lot of rubbish SEO activities done and that there are customers who have been badly burnt. Often it is these very customers who seek some form of safety net when venturing back into the world of internet marketing and I think any SEO worth their salt should be able to offer something to put their mind at rest. All you are doing is getting people to the site which is part of a marketing process; can you do enough to guarantee that the site will gain enough visibility to achieve this? If you know what you are doing then of course you can! At the end of the day though, if I was sitting here cash in hand needing SEO and one SEO offered some sort of satisfaction guarantee, ranking guarantee or marketing exposure guarantee, and the other that just offers the best they can do, I would be placing my money with the one that offered a money back guaranteed SEO if they do not succeed to their set expectations. Why? Because, I, like you, am in business and want to get what I pay for.
My question is, if there is no guarantee on offer then why not?
