Safety in the Queensland Construction Industry
Different types of labor entail different risks for employees. Individuals working at zoos are vulnerable to attacks by caged animals; people in medical labs are exposed to chemical exposures; and workers at power plants are often subjected to radiation risks. People who may apply for a Queensland White Card are residents of the state or interstate individuals who wish to work in Queensland’s construction industry. The induction course trains applicants to identify workplace health and safety requirements, as well as construction hazards and control measures. Applicants are also taught how to communicate and report health and safety issues they have identified and how to respond to each particular incident. These enable trainees to gain knowledge on how to handle, mitigate, and react to different hazards included in construction work. The White Card course also includes specific training on management of heavy machinery, electrical wiring, and chemicals used in construction. Once an applicant completes and passes the training, he would be given a White Card. Also called a general induction card, the Queensland White Card is proof that an individual is trained and certified to work in the construction industry. The applicant also receives a Statement of Attainment, which indicates his White Card number, proves he completed the White Card course, and grants him access to construction sites. Trainings conducted by various firms in Queensland are dedicated to providing knowledge to construction employees and giving them the necessary skills to address any kind of safety issue in construction work.
