Dancing is a popular form of social entertainment. It is also an artistic way of self expression which you can do solo, with a partner, or with a group. If you love dancing with a partner, you’ll surely fall in love with ballroom dancing.

The word “ball” from ballroom is from the Latin word “ballare” meaning dance. It is a type of dance that requires couples as participants. Ballroom dancing may take many forms, including those with quick steps to those with slow, lingering movements. Some of the common variations of ballroom dance are the waltz, mambo, tango, foxtrot, and rumba.

Waltz is one of the smoothest and most romantic forms of ballroom dance of all time. Developed in Germany, it served as the basis for many types of dance today. People dancing the waltz must be able to do its unique rise-and-fall action. The waltz is also characterized by the intricate swaying of dancers’ bodies. Music used in the waltz is written in 3/4 time, which makes it easy for beginners to recognize and learn.

If there are romantic kinds of dance, there are also sensual ones. An example of a sensual dance is Mambo, which is based mostly on forward and backward movements. Mambo means “shake it,” so dancers must be able to do exaggerated hip movements and quick steps. It became a favorite among ballroom dancing enthusiasts in the 1940s. It was even popularized by the singer Ricky Martin.

Another sensual form of ballroom dancing Indianapolis dancing enthusiasts enjoy is the tango. The immortal saying “it takes two to tango” is true because tango definitely requires two participants, a male and a female. It originated in South America during the early twentieth century and became popular along with its different styles. Dancers are expected to do strong, dramatic head snaps and sensual movements while being connected at the hip or chest.

Slower than the tango and quite similar to the waltz is the foxtrot, a form of ballroom dancing Indianapolis couples love to dance. It is characterized by simple walking steps and side steps. It was developed in the United States and named after its inventor, Harry Fox. Dancers should be able to take long steps during slower counts and short steps during faster counts while dancing the foxtrot. Music used in the foxtrot is written in 4/4 time with a tempo of around 120 to 136 beats per minute.

Rumba is even more sensual than the tango, as it tells a story of love and passion between a man and woman. Often referred to as the “grandfather of the Latin dances,” rumba originated in Cuba and first came into the United States in early 1920s. It is the slowest of the five competition Latin and American forms of dance and is offered in most dance classes Indianapolis has to offer.
