If you want to grow vegetables in your limited space, you can try tending a container vegetable garden. With container gardening, you do not need a plot of land to grow fresh vegetables. Any kind of vegetable can grow in a pot, such as carrots, radishes, and lettuce. Crops that bear fruits over a long period, including tomatoes and peppers, also make great container vegetable gardens. You can use any kind of containers for this project: flower pots, pails, buckets, wire baskets, bushel baskets, wooden boxes, nursery flats, window planters, washtubs, strawberry pots, plastic bags, large food cans, and so on. After choosing a container, the next step is to drill holes at the base or bottom. This will allow excess water to drain, preventing mold from accumulating and plant roots from rotting. When growing a container vegetable garden, you have to consider the container’s size and if your preferred plant can grow there healthily. For example, large vegetables like tomatoes and eggplants require a five-gallon container for each plant. In contrast, you can plant tomato, cucumber, parsley and chives all in a large 24-30” container. These vegetables grow well together and share the same water and sun requirements. One of the container garden design tips you must follow is to avoid using dark colored containers. These absorb heat which damages the plant roots. If you’re going to use dark colored pots, paint them in a lighter color before you begin planting. Adding soil in your container vegetable garden is among the best garden container ideas. Potting mixes are highly recommended because they allow plants to receive enough supply of air and water. They consist of one part compost and two parts planting mix that improve fertility. In contrast, peat-based mixes which contain peat and vermiculite are relatively sterile and pH adjusted. Another option is to use organic fertilizer to keep your vegetables fed for the whole growing season. Other great garden design ideas include growing different vegetable plant varieties. There are many kinds of vegetables that you can grow in small spaces. You can grow carrots with potted flowers, whereas cucumbers grow well in large containers. Eggplants grown in containers can help control some common pests like wire worms. Peppers can be grown indoors during winter and outdoors during summer.
