Using Lighting as Design
Lighting fixtures are the unsung heroes of any room. Whether they are lamps, display lighting, hid fixtures or state of the art LED lighting, without it you wouldn't be able to get the full mood of a room, let alone see anything that is inside of it. If you think about it, we truly plan our rooms around our lighting fixtures, or visa versa. If we want a bright and airy feel we design a room and light it differently than we would if we were looking for something a little darker. The thing is, lighting doesn't just have to be about the light, it can also be about the design of the fixtures. It used to be that the lighting fixtures that lit our rooms were rather ornate and fashionable in their design. Then, the trend went away and fixtures became fairly uniform and boring in their simplicity. Now a days, though, people are rediscovering using lighting fixtures are design points in their décor.
The great thing about lighting is that you don't need to have an interior designer to help you with your lighting needs, you can do it all yourself. It's actually very easy to go out there and pick some lights that will change up the way your room looks, especially if you are using light fixtures as decorations as well. Your best bet in finding something that you like is to head down to your nearest warehouse style furniture store. You know what I'm talking about, that one with the funny sounding name where you can get dinner as well as a new sofa. Places like that will give you an entire floor or lighting options, including fixtures that work on their own as decoration.
The thing to remember is that you shouldn't get too caught up on what a lighting fixture looks like, it still needs to be able to actually light up a room the way you want it to be. For example, you can get an exquisite looking vintage lamp for your living room, but while it might look great, if it doesn't produce that much light you are going to have to purchase a variety of other lighting fixtures just to balance out the lighting issues. Remember: the ultimate goal of purchasing lighting fixtures is to light a room the way that you want it.
The best way to make sure you can get what you need the first time you buy fixtures is to take the time to map out your rooms and see where you need the light most. If you need light all over the room you may want to look at overhead lighting. If you need it in just a small corner, then a simple lamp might just do the trick.
