China is an ancient and fascinating country with an ancient and fascinating culture. Many beautiful works of art, delectable dishes and amazing technology originated in China. Chinese cooking, painting, calligraphy and advanced innovations continue to inspire and influence artists and enthusiasts the world over. One of the most remarkable art forms China has shared with the world is the combination of music, dance and balance practiced by Chinese acrobats.

To watch Chinese acrobats perform is a unique experience, because Chinese acrobatic theatre encompasses more than just one art form. Rather than simply performing traditional or modern dances, contortionism, high-wire acts or balancing acts, Chinese acrobats blend many art forms into a single, breathtaking whole.

One of the first things that comes to mind when one thinks of Chinese acrobatics is the colourful and striking attire that the performers wear. Some of these costumes are remarkable for their flowing, graceful movements as the acrobats perform. Others, like the costumes worn by the Chinese acrobats known as Lion Dancers, are made to conceal the performers, making them appear to be animals or fantastical creatures. All costumes worn in Chinese acrobatic theatre are works of art in their own right; stunning tributes to the beauty of the art.

Perhaps the best known elements of Chinese acrobatic theatre is the wide variety of balancing acts Chinese acrobats perform. Gymnasts create human towers, requiring strength, balance and total trust on the part of the performers. High-wire artists not only walk along the tightrope, they perform beautiful dances high above the ground, often while balancing plates, fans or other fragile objects. Plate-balancing can also be done while riding on a unicycle—sometimes even riding on a unicycle on a high wire!  Some balancing acts include many people balanced on a single bicycle, performing graceful stunts as they ride.

Chinese acrobats are also known for their mind-bending contortionist acts. Contortionist gymnastics can be incorporated into traditional Chinese dances for a beautiful and surreal experience, or mixed with modern dance to literally put a twist on a beloved performance art. Chinese acrobats also mix contortionism with balancing acts, performing stunts that the audience can scarcely believe are possible. Often, these contortionist dances tell a story, adding another dimension to the performance.

While dancing, balancing and contortionism are the best-known acts put on by Chinese acrobats, there are many other reasons to attend a Chinese acrobatic theatre performance. Many of these acrobats are also dancers, able to perform gorgeous choreographed dances as a troupe. Chinese acrobatic theatre can also include demonstrations of extreme kung-fu, showcasing the artistic side of this well-known martial art. Shaolin monks also perform at these shows, demonstrating their amazing ability to resist pain, deflect missiles, and perform feats of nearly inhuman endurance.

When you go to Chinese acrobatics in a theatre performance, you are watching an extraordinary performance, the result of countless hours of training, practicing and polishing an incredible number of difficult, complex art forms. It is an experience that everyone should have at least once in their lifetime.
