What are the Differences between Gasoline and Diesel?
Gasoline and diesel are the two main engines and fuel used in most cars today. Although they are both obtained from the same source, they have a lot of differences when it comes to chemical properties, energy efficiency and market price. These have their own pros and cons that car owners must consider when they will make a purchase.
Both gasoline and diesel are derived from crude oil; however, they have different molecular structures. This is the result of crude oil undergoing a refining process at different temperatures. Gasoline is more volatile because of its base constituents and the additives put into it but diesel is denser, heavier and has a higher boiling point than water.
Aside from that, gasoline and diesel also differ in how they burn fuel to create energy. Gasoline-powered cars use spark plugs to ignite the fuel while diesel-powered cars compress air that produces heat to ignite a little bit of the fuel/air mixture. Since gasoline engines burn mostly gasoline and diesel engines burn mostly air, the latter is more cost and energy efficient.
