Pickup Trucks and Variants
Pickup trucks are light trucks suitable for carrying heavy loads like luggage, bicycles, and even furniture or appliances. These vehicles are also suitable for long travels. It is great for adventurous people who are willing to withstand the elements of nature with vehicles to do the same. There are light trucks that can also travel off-road.
There are different kinds of pickup trucks—full-size, mid-size, and compact. Compact pickups are the most common and widespread type of pickup. It is the type that dominates the pickup market in Europe though they are more popular in rural areas.
Mid-size trucks are relatively larger then compact pickups; these have about four- to eight-cylinder engines unlike compact pickups that have only four-cylinder engines. Full-size pickups are similar, but much larger. Full-size pickups can carry heavy loads; for example, “one-ton” 2006 pickups can carry loads as heavy as 4,000 lb (1,800 kg) to 5,800 lb (2,600 kg).
Compact and mid-size pickup trucks are “standard cab” pickups. There is only one row of seats for the driver and about two passengers. In recent years, this single row has changed to individual seats—one for the driver and another for the passengers. In Edmonton Ram 3500 and similar trucks have extra seating at the back.
There are mid-size and full-size pickup trucks that have the standard cab, but some are extended cabs like, in Edmonton Ram 3500. An extended cab truck has extra seating at the back. These seats are usually bench seats with extra doors on each side. Some extended cabs have “suicide doors”—doors that have back hinges. Extended cabs also have either a standard bed (about five feet long) or a long bed (about eight feet).
In Edmonton Ram 3500 is a type of crew cab, which is similar to the extended cab except that it has extra doors with front hinges. Crew cabs usually have short beds because these are often used as passenger vehicles that occasionally carry heavy luggage. However, there are crew cabs that have long beds too. Like any of the other pickups, the crew cab is great for on- and off-highway travel.
